Top Atlanta Tech grad: “I decided to become the best me.” Listen to her inspiring speech.

I don’t think anyone felt asleep during this commencement speech by 2015 Atlanta Technical College graduate and “Student of the Year’ award winner Yesmeen Jiles: (She appears a minute-and-a-half into the video.)

Beautiful!  The little people will only see that she mispronounced "ask."  I don't think the Holy Spirit cares one whit about that.

"Start Strong, Stay Strong, Finish Strong."  Believe in yourself and believe in the power of the Holy Spirit to transform individuals and to transform this world.

She won't be using that dialect much longer. She's going into business !

Higher education in general and technical colleges specifically have become the "underground railroad" of our day to deliver people of color to a better life than what liberals have planned for them. I personally couldn't be happier for her.Maybe one day she could work for me...

...Or me for her.

Oh for heavens sake, Astro.  This is the second comment of your that seeks to turn this young lady's inspiring speech into an "liberal verses conservative" or " Democrat verse Republican" screed.

Give it a rest!

You missed out on this one Quido. She's going to succeed, believe it or not, without your "help" !

You're really cranky lately, even more so than usual. Hit the beach and let the cooling waters wash away your anger, bitterness and frustration.I'm only concerned with your well being.

Astro,

She obviously got "help" along the way from educators who encouraged her to enter Athens Tech.  She even talks about that.... I am glad she has turned her life around.  She appears to be a very determined young lady, but her determination has nothing to do with political affiliation.  It has to do with self-confidence and a strong spirit. Those things are not dependent upon one's voting preferences.

I am not frustrated in general - I am just frustrated with your insistence with turning everything political to push your agenda.

Good for her...taking responsibility for her life at an early age. How refreshing!!!

I have lived here for a long time but never heard of Atlanta Tech. What is the story?

@Tcope

Atlanta Tech is one of the 23 Technical Colleges of Georgia, located all over the state and part of the University System of Georgia.  Two-year colleges, they provide training in technical fields and also the basic two-year core curriculum courses of the USG colleges and universities.

P.S.  Too bad that my old computer doesn't tune in YouTube very well, so I didn't hear her speech. But I'm very glad that Maureen is publicizing these graduations as well as those of the schools such as GT and UGA, for they often represent a greater struggle and success. Georgia's technical colleges seem to be a well-kept secret for many, but they are a real boon for those who don't want to go the usual academic route and wish to get technical job training.

She is a great role model for showing how to turn perceived obstacles into an opportunity.  Please follow up with her in a few years to see what she is doing.

Good gravy! A promising future Republican!

"I decided to become the best ME"!  (4:57)

"I'm not here to impose my beliefs on anyone "  (5:10)

"A girl that didn't have a mother that understood the power of education(!)"  (5:42)

"I tell you today that there is NOTHING you can't do!!!"  (6:02)

Bravo. Inspiring. This woman has turned away from dependency and the notion that she needs somebody ELSE to help her get ahead.

Thank you for posting this.

@Astropig Sorry, but I don't believe that "I'm not here to impose my beliefs on anyone" qualifies as a Republican attitude these days.
