DOE forces out official over Facebook posts. School chief: I was ‘disheartened and disgusted.’

Georgia Schools Superintendent Richard Woods ousted Associate Superintendent Jeremy Spencer today after the AJC reported on his racially charged Facebook posting.

Superintendent Woods said:

“Like most people, I was disheartened and disgusted to see the posts made by Mr. Spencer on his Facebook page. These posts in no way reflect my opinions, or those of the Department of Education.

As of this morning, Mr. Spencer is no longer an employee of the Department of Education. My job, and the job of all employees at the Department of Education, is to look out for the educational well-being of all of Georgia’s 1.7 million students, and more than 100,000 teachers and educators.

A reader asked me whether Spencer was fired or allowed to resign. So, put that question to the DOE spokesman who said: “He technically resigned as the superintendent can’t fire employees without the approval of the board. So for the sake of time, he resigned this morning.”

I have to confess: I thought it would take weeks for the DOE to respond to the troubling Facebook posts that I wrote about yesterday on my AJC blog.

Woods surprised me and many others by acting within 24 hours to fire Spencer for the Facebook postings. I thought the posts were appalling stuff for anyone to share on social media, but certainly even more so for an official whose job it is to educate every child in this state.

We should not mince words about the content and the images in question — they were offensive and insulting. It saddened me to imagine Georgia students seeing them and realizing these were the adults running their schools.

That students can now take a different lesson from this — racism and prejudice will not be excused or tolerated in Georgia’s education agency — is a credit to Woods.

Spencer made the mistake of resigning under undue pressure I might add.  May work for the School Superintendent in short run.  And do him harm in the final analysis.

Richard Woods you will pay a heavy price for allowing this to fall on your shoulders.  If the board has any decency they will reverse this injustice.  If you don't want to see this just require all facebook accounts be deleted.

To take a mans job over something like this is WRONG and YOU know it.

So called friends on facebook are going to set this facebook on its head.  NO  One is safe on facebook based on the fact that you have to constantly monitor what your so called friends put up on a thread.

I can see this turning into a complete nightmare for every teacher in the State of Georgia.

Not to mention every state worker.

I love it.  A new Game To screw people over with.

The State General Assembly you guys are going to catch hell over this act.

State School Superintendent,  You and yours have opened a can of worms that you will regret ever taking on.

Hiring policy should have a place to sign telling all workers to delete their facebook accounts because they can not be controlled by the employee.

Every teacher and every politician in the State of Georgia better be deleting their facebook and all their friends NOW.  Because the game is on to get everyone that has ever had a facebook account in trouble.  New Game !  GAME  ON !!

Meanwhile....

While Richard Woods set a land speed record in prostrating himself before the politically correct pathogens, colleges are sending students and faculty to a four day"White Guilt Conference".

In the left coast looney bin, Portland Community College designated April as "Whiteness History Month".  So, students will get a month of MLK butt kissing, a month of black invention myths, and then a month of bash whitey.

Speaking of muslims, over 500 New Year's Eve rapes, including 126 gang rapes, across Europe as north african immigrants went on a rampage.  They also had to close down a swimming pool in Denmark due to muslim behavior too disgusting to list here.

But by all means, let's crucify the white guy who points out the politically incorrect truth.

Lee_CPA2
Lee_CPA2

Well, well, well.  I see political correctness and political cowardice has claimed another white victim.  All I have read from the PC crowd (including Maureen) is how "racist" and "offensive" Spencer's facebook posts were.  But yet, no one has been able to refute them.

Spencer posted about Finland being white as the reason they perennially lead the world in education and concurrently, that they did not have any blacks.  Fact is, Finland IS a white nation, that is, until Europe's current suicide by immigration strategy plays out.   And the fact is there is not a single black nation anywhere in the world that can boast of high academic achievement levels.  Even in Georgia, school systems Gerrymander districts in order to get more white students into black schools in order to boost scores.

Spencer posted a cartoon that illustrated how the various non-white groups can claim pride in their ethnicity, but when a white person does it, they are called racist.   One can look at colleges who promote non-white ethnic groups to form various affinity club such as the "Black Student Association".  But when a white tries to form such a club, he is called "racist", even by the college administrators who allow minorities to form clubs.

Finally, Spencer posted an ethnic joke about muslims and bacon.  Fact is, there are numerous countries populated by muslims where wiping your butt with your bare hand is common practice.  These same muslims also do not eat pork as they view the pig as an "unclean" animal.

Basically, Spencer was fired because he pointed out the hypocrisy of the politically correct.  Spencer's main mistake was that he failed to realize the hypersensitive and intolerant environment he now worked in.

Who hired Mr. Spencer as an Associate Superintendent?  Was he even qualified for the job in the first place?

So I just read a comment on social media from someone claiming to be a former HS biology student of Spencer's that this nitwit also tried teaching "intelligent design" to his class. So, not only is he not very smart when it comes to his Facebook presence, but he's also a lawbreaker.

Shocked. Shocked, I tell you.

I've been critical of Mr. Woods from day one but must give him his due. He did the right thing and did it swiftly.

KUDOS  to our SSS Richard Woods for stopping the buck.

Unfortunately Mr. Spencer is 100% correct. Study after study has proved this time and time again. Mr. Spencer is also entilted not only his opinion but to also voice it. It's a right given to citizens of this country. Mr. Spencer I suggest you hire an attorney...

@JamesFloyd Dr. John Rhodes Alston Trotter might disagree with you. As would I. Retirement, like rank, has its privileges.

Unfortunately, Spencer resigned and by doing so, gave up any option of litigation.

@atlcarl: It all seems so simple when viewed in your sophomoric way, doesn't it?

America's downfall will be in the increasingly unchallenged way your ideology is accepted in the schools and in the media.

atlcarl
atlcarl

@Hillary's Emails My ideology ?  I'm 100 % certain I did NOT create the Pledge of Allegiance. So apparently you believe the Pledge of Allegiance should NOT be accepted in our schools , media , or country , as long as it still says Liberty , AND justice for all . "  Which proves my point , you are one of the people who believes America should only benefit your kind , or ideology , but surely not ALL citizens . And yes , it is simple :  either this country is for all taxpayers and citizens , or it is not .  There is NO Gray area on this issue .  So if you don't believe in the Pledge of Allegiance , just say so and stop reciting it .  And don't teach it to your kids ( God forbid ) because it might lead to their " downfall ."

atlcarl
atlcarl

What truly disgusts me are the comments of some people who actually tried to defend the bigoted and ignorant hate speech of an under qualified bureaucrat who clearly was awarded his $138,000 TAXPAYER funded job because of political/family connections .  But I guess that is considered " good " welfare . Once again , a glaring example of the greatest weakness of America , which might eventually lead to the fall of this great nation if we don't change the troubling trend .  A dominant strain of selfishness and greed that centers on the attitude of " as long as my family , culture , religion , community , or race is doing okay , I don't give a damn about what happens to the rest of America . "  Whatever happened to the Pledge of Allegiance , should we stop reciting it  completely ? Remember the words "  ONE nation , under God with liberty , AND JUSTICE for  ( pick the correct word ) some , a few , a specific religion , culture, race , the politically connected , the rich , the elite , or does it end with " ALL? "  So my fellow citizens , do we still believe in the Pledge , or don't we ?  Is America still " E Pluribus Unum , " or are we breaking apart into our own version of the Balkan atrocities , and the secular tribal wars of the Middle East ?

Sad to see evidence to support a backwards, racist, cronyistic, pattern in state government no matter what party. Woods credibility and judgement has taken a huge hit with this hiring.

"I thought the posts were appalling stuff for anyone to share on social media, but certainly not an official whose job it is to educate every child in this state."  I imagine you meant something like "even more so."

Thank you for speaking out about this, Maureen.  We need more folks, in general, who needed to do the same.  Did other state officials make comments on the FB?  If so, did they not speak up?

Travelfish

Let me join you in congratulating yourself, Maureen. Now, how about going after black fathers who abandon their children, the ones you rightfully want to shield from prejudice?

Do they not deserve at least the same effort we put into lessening bias, bullying and tobacco use? Seventy-two percent of black children grow up without a father in the home, more than double the rate among whites or Asians. As recently as the 1960s that number was just twenty-five percent.

And your silence is literally killing them.

EduKtr is one of a long list of blog contributors blocked by Maureen for disagreeing with the teachers' union view on issues.

You would be one of those blocked if toadying to unions became a crime.

@Travelfish Eduktr, I wrote a five part-series on the importance of fathers. As a parenting and family writer for 13 years, I wrote dozens of stories on how involved fathers change the trajectory of children's lives. I wrote dozens of editorials on the need to strengthen child support laws.

Here's the difference: This man was a public employee. He represents the state. He can be held accountable for actions that impact his ability to do the job that Georgians are paying him nearly $140,000 to do.

Hapless or absentee parents are not in the employ of the state; there is no legal compulsion that they love or honor their children.  We can require parents feed, clothe and shelter them. But we can't force parents to like or spend time with their kids. Nor do I think you would support laws that attempted to legislate parental time or affection.

Your statements are meant for impact, not discussion. But I think you tried too hard this time to land a blow.

Travelfish

No, I think readers will conclude you're trying too hard here to sweep the issue under the rug. Who among us benefit from that?

Certainly not the children.

This is another South Georgia teacher; these attitudes are very common down there but most aren't stupid enough to publicly post material that might be offensive in Atlanter.

I hope he's never allowed back in a classroom either. He should never have been there in the first place. With views like that, I cannot fathom why he ever went into education.

@newsphile We are talking about this issue: This associate superintendent came from the classroom into a high level oversight role. (Although I am certain that teachers are well warned about Facebook.) I will send your comment to the education editor.
