‘Southern Momma’ viral videos: A real family facing real challenges

Several folks shared this video with me of Deborah Smith, an outraged Coweta County mother shooting one of her children’s smartphones because she’s fed up with the negative impact of social media. (She’s a precise shot.)

The video dates back a year ago but is being promoted by a video company so it’s experiencing a resurgence. There are several videos online of Smith under the name of “Southern Momma.”

Among them is an April 5th video in which Smith complains her two sons are using drugs and treating her house like a flophouse. So, she puts their beds in the yard, sets them on fire, shoots them to spark even more flames and deadpans, “Boys, this is all that’s left of your beds. I’m sorry. But they exploded.”

While the video is amusing, the story behind it is anything but. Smith has had her struggles with her sons, as the AJC’s Ellen Eldridge reports tonight.

According to her AJC.com story. (Read the full story if you can.)

After getting in trouble with the law earlier this year, both boys were put on probation, Smith said. “I made another video because my boys were out of control,” Smith said. “They’re stealing from us, they’re buying drugs and hanging out with drug thug buddies.”

So she returned to social media to teach the teenagers they couldn’t use drugs and come home to lie in the bed. “Today, we’re going to take that option of where to sleep away,” Smith said, shotgun in hand. “I’ve had enough.”

Someone called the Coweta County Department of Children and Family Services and a social worker told Smith she had to sign a “safety plan,” agreeing not to use weapons in front of the children. She refused to let the agency deny her First and Second Amendment rights, she said, and DFACS took her sons on Monday. The DFACS social worker did not return a phone call Friday.
