Gov. Deal enters school bathroom fray, accuses feds of overreach in transgender guidance

Gov. Nathan Deal

Gov. Nathan Deal today issued a statement in response to the Obama administration’s directive to school systems on how to accommodate transgender students in school restroom questions. He does not state Georgia will take the feds to court, but rather asks the state school superintendent to help districts figure out a response to an issued that has blown up into the latest battle in the culture wars.

He says:

“The Obama administration’s directive, recently announced by press release, to local school systems regarding accommodations for transgender students has generated confusion and controversy among parents, students and school officials.

While I do not believe this directive carries the force of law, the Departments of Justice and Education have threatened to revoke federal funding from schools that fail to comply. Georgia’s constitution and state laws, however, require these decisions be made at the local level.

While our 181 school systems must each determine an appropriate response to this federal overreach, I have asked State School Superintendent Richard Woods to provide guidance to those local school systems seeking assistance and clarity on this issue in order to ensure that there will be as much uniformity across our state as possible.

Until Congress acts, I assure the citizens of Georgia that the offices of the governor, attorney general and state school superintendent will work cooperatively to protect the interests of Georgia’s children from this abuse of federal executive authority.”

As I recall, about 10 to 15 years ago in Atlanta a surgeon was performing a circumcision on a newborn boy. He butchered the surgery, or the surgical equipment was faulty. Bottom line: the boy was turned into a baby girl by creating a female sexual organ for the baby boy, turned baby girl. This is a true story, reported on WSB-TV, at that time.

As I recall that newly created girl never really felt like a girl in the years that followed. If people were either wiser, or more informed about biological phenomena, they could understand how one's gender identification does not simply depend upon the two obvious sexual organs.  Brain chemistry and DNA are also involved in gender identification that probably begins in utero. We must start to understand sexual phenomena beyond the very literal, mundane, and patently obvious.

As an evolved society, we should be more compassionate and less judgmental regarding variations of differences in gender identification and sexual orientation. Nature is nature beyond judgment, and every person is unique not only in sexuality but in every other way that contributes to our common humanity.

First of all, Deal did not "enter the fray".  He merely complained about the feds "overreach" and then ASKED State Superintendent Woods to "provide guidance" to the locals.

If that is your definition of "entering the fray", I would hate to see it when he "ignores the issue".

People here saying it doesn't make a difference to them who uses whose bathrooms? Guess they must be the Liberals saying that, because for Liberals, Anything Goes.....moral or immoral....and if you object, you are Immediately deemed a racist.....Ho Hum.....

I'm not sure that transgenders using the public LAVATORIES of their chosen gender identity is that big a deal.  Men's/Boys and Women's/Girl's rooms all have stalls.   Transgendered people don't usually want to call attention to themselves, because it can be risky to do so in a strange place.  They'll use the stalls, with male to female trans people using stalls 100% of the time..

Applying the same rules to LOCKER ROOMS WITH SHOWERS strikes me as a bit tougher.   Many locker rooms come equipped with common dressing rooms and common showers, the use of which strikes me as a bit awkward when a transgendered person enters the locker room of choice without first having undergone gender reassignment surgery.

At the very least, the Administration needs to explain with concrete examples precisely what it expects to see in an compliant school.

If the Presidents people can't or won't explain themselves better, then they would have launched the "If-you-haven't-seen-it before, then-throw-a-hat-over-it" School of Locker Room Jurisprudence.

Maybe Deal can grow a pair and fight this. He has already had one chance and backed down.

So Trans folks are pushing for "any sex" use of any bathroom.  Obviously that means they have no issue using bathrooms with people whom they consider "opposite sex".    Because the clear result of this "pushed policy" will be exactly that.

So why not just set a policy that everyone has to use the bathroom that best fits your "equipment".   If you can use a urinal, use the men's.  If not, use the woman's.  They want to be able to use mixed bathrooms anyway.  This doesn't hurt them at all - in any real way.

Why does everyone else have to change, when it gains those who are Trans absolutely nothing?  Nothing!

I guess as usual it's just an attempt to force everyone else to change/suffer.  With the obvious result being that the new "use any shower/bathroom" policy will enable the pedophiles and "upskirt video" men to get access to girls and women.

It makes zero sense.  None.  Just set the above litmus, and get this idiocy over with.  Can't wait for a sane President and admin who can stop this craziness.

As the Wall Street Journal has pointed out, Obama's using this as an election year issue to fire up his party's radical base.

Hillary desperately needs it.

Governor Deal, what will you do to protect Georgia 's transgender citizens, who have actually been frequent targets of violence, unlike the pretend issue of transgender on school child violence.

@MStLouis

What, exactly, would you have him do? Transgender citizens get the same protections under the law that everybody else does.If they are being assaulted, they can call the police and report a crime. If they are being harassed, same thing. Just what special "A Team" do you want assembled to roam the countryside righting wrongs against one particular group? How does that square with a "fight for equality" that is the theme of these groups?

I'd say a lot of inner city single mothers would wonder why their neighborhoods are shooting galleries but the transgender community feels like it needs special protection for their lifestyle.

@Astropig @MStLouis Astro, you can't talk actual sanity to someone like this.  Their goal is to make sure everyone else suffers - and bends to their will.

Right-O. If I don't want a biological man to follow my 10 year old daughter into the ladies room,I'm a hateful bigot.

News flash for libs: They'll be in there with your kids, too.Let's see how tolerant you are in practice.

@Astropig @dcdcdc @MStLouis Lol, I've got news for you. They've been in those bathrooms with your kids for YEARS, you just didn't know because you didn't hear a big stink about it. Tell me, did anything happen to your children?

This is a big conservative temper tantrum. An "issue" in search of a problem.

Remember this conservatives: "criminals don't care about the law" -- the common refrain against new gun laws. So what exactly do you think you're going to accomplish with this law? Are you saying that pedophiles care about the law? That this is going to get passed and they're going to say "Dang! I guess I can't now!"

No. We practiced safe procedures 100% of the time. They never got the chance.Sometimes it was a hassle, many times inconvenient, but we were vigilant.Guess you missed out on my young 'uns.

Has any rational person thought about what the Republicans vs the Democrats are saying....Obama / Democrats are stating if you are a  Transgender Man (a person born as female who is now a man) should use the men's bathroom but the idiot Republicans are saying NO that Transgender Man should use the girls bathroom.  Have the Republicans thought this through...I highly doubt it b/c they would have to think about the issue.   Has Nathan Deal  looked at aTransgender Man (they look and act like a man) why do the Republicans want the Transgender Man using the bathroom with their daughters...Can someone please explain this to me?  And please don't say its about men using the lady's room because its not..

@whudsonga So you think any man, including pedophiles and upskirt video pervs should be able to go in public restrooms and showers w/ little girls.

Yeah...that sounds like the best possible solution.

withholding funds is an idle threat.  exactly how many transgenders' are there out there that would rather see THEIR rights upheld OVER the right to a FREE EDUCATION that is for the best for ALL of us? seriously citizens, we gotta hold account for ALL STATES RIGHTS whenever the federal govt  wants otherwise.  this is nothing more than a new age ROMAN EMPIRE.  Federal govt has less people but MORE MONEY. STATES have MORE PEOPLE but LESS MONEY.  we seem to be in quicksand about every-little-bitty emotional issue.  Considering what's going over seas, I'd hope we would take more of a COMMON SENSE APPROACH and learn from HISTORY- peace out.......

@stevenmia Doesn't work well with large multiperson bathrooms.

Obviously it makes no sense for "single person" bathrooms to be limited by sex at all.

Election year edict designed to get the Democrat water carriers in the media to hound Republicans. I continue to see this issue brought up with Republican leadership.  Could "journalist" ask Hillary, Bernie and some of the representatives who's districts are inner city what their stance is?

"Dragged in to the bathroom fray" would be a more accurate way to put it. He didn't seek this out.No one did. A group of selfish, obnoxious social outcasts want to pull the whole country through a knothole because they have run out of real civil rights issues and this is the best they can do.The worst president in history is egging them on. Just another meaningless social wedge "issue" designed to pit one American against another.

Can't wait until this guy is out of office.God help us,but its hard to see how we could do worse.

@Astropig Well there's Hillary and the Donald.  So that's about a 99% chance it gets worse.

Federal overreach or local underreach? Take your pick.
