Fulton sixth grader: Classmates shouted ‘build a Donald Trump wall’ at Latino opponents in soccer game

Isaac Lambert is a rising Fulton County seventh grader. His dad told the AJC Isaac loves to read and write, and is concerned about the state of the world, especially in politics and the environment.

And Isaac is worried kids are picking up some bad habits from the adults in the world. He has some advice for us as you will see in this piece he wrote.

By Isaac Lambert

It’s an election year. You may be wondering how the elections impact our schools. Unfortunately, they have the potential to do a lot.

I’m in sixth grade — middle school. A number of weeks ago we took our standardized tests. One of the days, after finishing the test, our teachers allowed us to play in the big field for an hour. I joined the soccer game. We picked team captains and divided the players evenly. There was one team with all Caucasians (or, as they are usually called, “whites”) and one team with Latinos (or, as they identify themselves and are usually called, “Mexicans”), along with a few extra white players. One of the team captains was Mexican, and one was white, so that explains that. I was on the Mexican team.

The whole game was pretty aggressive, a lot of kicking shins and cursing, but there wasn’t really a problem until halfway through the game when my team, the Mexicans, got a penalty shot. One of our players was about to take it when, all of a sudden, a player from the other team shouted, “let’s build a Donald Trump wall!” and they all formed a human wall in front of the goal.

The player on my team who was taking the penalty shot called the offender a racist. Then another kid from the other team shouted, “get the h*** out of our country!!” while another started a chorus of kids chanting, “Whites! Whites! Whites!” You can imagine the shouting that followed. As for the soccer game, I don’t know what happened to it; I left.

Twenty minutes later, we were back in our classrooms where my teammates started to discuss the incident. I came over and asked them what, if anything, they planned to do. They didn’t really have any plans, so I, as a student who identifies himself as Jewish and occasionally has had to deal with prejudice as well, made a suggestion. We wrote down the names of all the kids who were saying racist things and what they said. The next day I handed the paper to the principal and told him what happened. He took it and promised to deal with it. The following day they pulled all of the kids who had said racist things from class and gave them ISS (in school suspension) or OSS (out of school suspension). That was that.

I have been going to public school since third grade. I’ve never seen or even heard of a racial problem involving whites and Mexicans before this incident. Some people say that certain politicians just express the prejudice against immigrants that people already have.

But I think they’re helping to create the prejudice.

The kids who said the racist comments in school should have known better, but they hear all this talk of “walls” and such from their parents. Their parents speak this way because they hear it from leaders of our country. We need to realize that how we speak often has an unforeseen impact on our country. What we say trickles down to the playground. Exert some caution, people, please!

Maureen ought to ask Donald Trump to comment on this story.

The behavior was flatly unacceptable.  I'd like to hear him comment on it.  If he's elected President, who will he be President of?

Wow. You mean there was trash talking during a game?! The horror! Maybe they should mimic real life by letting them score on the oenalty kick, then let them replace their goalie with the other team's goalie, and then if the "white" team scores they are forced to have a player leave the field. Score another goal - another player leaves the field. Maybe then this delicate flower whom wrote the article would feel better. That is until he attends college and someone writes something in chalk on the sidewalk that finally forces him into therapy.....

You'll notice that this "delicate flower" didn't get his feelings hurt. He stood up and took action against ignorance. It would seem to be important to draw a distinction between racist taunts and trash talk. Learn some history, dude.

It seems like almost yesterday we played smear the queer at recess and meant nothing by it.  Today they would expel you from elementary school.

Since all forms of prejudice are learned behavior, and since the teachers are usually parents, nothing that happened at this soccer game should surprise anyone. Blame Trump if you want, but I think the impetus for this kind of behavior can be found a lot closer to home.

My nephew went to Walton High and all thru his life he heard the Repub bias an positions on a multitude of issues from his class mates. His parents asked him why they said what they said, asking follow up questions that made him THINK ! He learned a lot about the world and himself. He does not permit himself to be indoctrinated to any one political theme. He thinks, asks questions, and critically thinks about solutions and positions.  The same for my two nieces from North Fulton . Their parents are conservatives, but they all discuss things in an orderly, respectful, and quiet manner. Again they think! Try it. It isn't hard.

My mother used the same process to display different points of view before establishing positions on things. They all now lean to be independents.

Awwwww....did it make them cry? Jeez! That was not nice of them to say but not racist or a hate crime for God sake! Chanting whites is rude for sure. Overflowing anger at the number of illegals in our country getting a free education! Get over this PCBS crap pussification and thicken your skins!!!

I agree.Unfortunately I don't expect those parents and kids to learn their lesson; instead I expect them to complain and make threats to the school officials until they cave in. Pathetic.

So what was the Republican Party referendum result on parental choice in the use of education tax dollars, Maureen?

A great classmate and young person to take a stance. I'm also happy that the school didn't sweep it under the rug and try to excuse the behaviors exhibited by some. What did the staff do as the students shouted at the game? Why did it take a student reporting the incident the next day for something to happen? I'm disappointed in the adults because had this young man not had the courage to report tjis, nothing would have happened.

Don't be fooled Hispanics are calling the white children racist names too. We just might not understand it because it is in Spanish.

This winter my high school age daughter and I took our comforters to the laundromat to wash them. Of course, the laundromat is in the now "little Mexico" street of aging apartments, convince stores, along with the Caltholic Church Mission outreach building.

I tried to politely ask some of the women both young and older how much and how long the dryers were. All feigned an inability to speak English. One older lady did try to help. Otherwise, my daughter and I were ostracized. I at the end went out to the car. My daughter, who like most American teens has taken some Spanish, came out to the car and told me that she finally got sick of the "Mexicans" calling her racist white comments in Spanish slang ( which of course she knew ). She then started speaking to them in Spanish. At which point, they then tried to apologize for the racial epithets they had been hurling at her for the past hour plus. One had the nerve to say to her in perfect English, why didn't you let us know you spoke Spanish from the Beginning. My daughter said she just look at her like are you crazy. I said it showed their ignorance for not realizing that most middle class plus teenage kids from the neighborhood around the corner would have a working knowledge of Spanish.

I would not doubt that the Hispanic aka " Mexican" team had been in Spanish jeering the white players. They are racist as well.

@Another comment No race or nationality has a lock on being "pure". But it is when you encounter bias that you can prove people wrong.

@Another comment That's horrible! so sorry about your experience. Believe it or not I have also been ostracized within a different hispanic group. It's ridiculous from any angle, whether you are black, white, yellow, brown, etc. Ignorance has no borders.

Hillary Clinton is a woman of substance.  I admire her intelligence, her strong sense of self,  her commitment to do the people's work in behalf of the most vulnerable in society, and her commitment to, and love for, her family.

I have always admired people who have had the internal strength to go against common thought regarding any given norm, if justice was on their side.  Hillary Clinton has been a model for women who want to spend their lives in service to others, fulfilling their own potential as well, and not focusing on the superficial demands by society that tells women to be less than who they are, to focus on their looks and sexuality in order to have power in that arena of life, to be their husband's helpmate only, and to exist only to fulfill their husbands' career desires.

Hillary Clinton will bring women of leadership capacity, and all women, into the 21st century just as Barack Obama has brought black leadership, and all minorities into the 21st century.  They have made quite a team, and both were wise enough to know that they could respect and like each other from a distance while working together to accomplish the same vision for our nation and our world.  Joe Biden, they both knew, was the more likable one, to whom the President had the more personal affinity, and who helped Obama in those ways.

Hillary Clinton is a rare woman, a rare individual, and even Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders in the deepest resources of their beings, I believe, know she will make the best President of the United States at this time in the nation's and the world's history.

Was it when the Europeans living in America decided they didn't want to do their own work and kidnapped Africans from Africa and put them through years of slavery? Was it any of the wars we intervened in, only to make matters worse? Was it during the Jim Crow era? Please do tell everyone when and where America was great?
