Election fallout: A principal warns parents about children’s hate speech

There were strong words from a California principal about student comments and taunts in the wake of the presidential election.

In this letter to parents, principal Devon Davis of Leonardo Da Vinci School in Hollywood Park says she will not tolerate students telling classmates they can now be deported. Students reacted in other troubling ways to the election, she writes, including discussing assassination. Davis’ letter in response is getting a lot of attention this week on social media.

Take a look at this TV report on the letter as both parents interviewed make good points.

Much of what she discussed is a matter of law, not politics and opinion. If you're in the country illegally no matter what country you came from, per federal law, you are to be deported. If you do so a second time, it's a felony and you are to serve a prison sentence, then be deported. Does the school itself never tell students that if you grow up to do and/or sell drugs, you will go to prison?.... Obviously students shouldn't say inaccurate things just for the purpose of being hurtful, but it sounds more like they are doing a great disservice to by trying to hide students from the facts, and attempting to censor what the speech of parents in their own homes. #JustTheFacts

If these kids are scared it is because of the parents. They are either talking about it around them or they are seeing it on TV. On some cases parents let these children get on this site and read the stuff that is brought here At any rate it is the parents responsibility of that child to monitor what they are getting period.

Denise Cooper, this school is located in Sacramento. Glad to hear and see the principal took immediate action.

Great letter. Thank you!! All Students all across America should practice this "advise" you would not want your child to feel unwanted or insecure!! Acceptance begins with you as parents!! It is your responsibility to teach your Kids LOVE,ACCEPTANCE and EQUALITY!!! Regardless of who you vote for or what you believe !! You should not be discussing Politics to your Children unless you can do it without PREJUDGES, RACISM OR HATE!!!

I think this principle needs to be shown the door to education and not indoctrination

Joi Chanél I think the principal should not try to indoctrinate the children the parents are responsible for the children's reactions just like all these college professor

Why not send a letter out saying if you are legal Americans, then tell your children they have nothing to fear. The school should be doing their due diligence to keep illegals out of our school system.

And clearly you're one of the ones teaching their kids to harass other students. Shameful!

A child can not help a situation that is created by adults. Hold the adults responsible.

Children should just be children and not have to deal with adult situations. Sadly that has not been the case on this issue. Parents should wake up!

Stop teaching your children to glorify selling drugs to and killing their own kind and you won't have to continually beg from us. Problem solved.

"beg from us". Obviously your reading comprehension is missing because your comment had nothing to do with the article.

The schools' job is to teach. Period. Doesn't matter who comes through the doors, we teach.

As Kellyanne Conway pointed out, the MSM did not prepare the public for a possible Trump win. Likewise, it seems neither did parents nor educators introduce the novel idea within a two-party system that (theoretically) EITHER one can win!

Ah yes, California.  Where schools took down the American flag because it "offended" the illegals.

Here's a thought, if young Jose is afraid of being deported, maybe it is because he knows his parents are criminals who broke our laws when they snuck into this country.  California is bankrupt due in a large part to all the illegals who crossed our borders illegally or stayed beyond their approved time and who overwhelm our healthcare, judicial, and educational systems.

It is not racist or "hate speech" to expect those in our country to obey our laws.

This is the problem kids raised by ignorant uneducated illiterate people who speak hate, talk hate and violence against others. Name calling.

Jeannie Casey in this case it's coming from one side - that of those who support the president-elect and his constant hate-mongering.

Jeannie Casey

Yes, but it is on both sides. Until the issues of this hate coming from both sides is addressed, I'm afraid that nothing will get better.

Just read the letter I belive there is nothing wrong in her asking you tell your child to behave themselves. That's it in a nut shell.

Curious, if someone goes into the school that shouldn't be there, will the principal have them removed by the police? Will they be deported off campus For being on campus illegally?

I'm seeing racism and hate on both sides, but the media will only speak of it coming from the right, totally ignoring it from the left.

This is worse than anything the rioters are doing! This 'principle' is stirring up fear where there was none! I don't see any reference to not rioting and voicing hatred toward Trump and his supporters! All that 'fear' is not a natural reaction for children that young. It is being instilled in children by ignorant parents and teachers, and they should be ashamed, but I fear they don't have the common sense to recognize their deficiencies!

Camille Mahdi

What???? HOW is the principle stirring up fear by reporting to parents what has been happening at the school where their children attend?????

Faith Pieper
Faith Pieper

IT'S FAKE!!! Children that young don't naturally have those fears! Get real! I raised 5 children ---- their fears were pretty basic ---- about whether their peers approved of them ---- they NEVER feared their govt. ---- even when Carter was in DC. It's unnatural!

The principal ???? It's those students with ignorant racist parents that's causing the problem.

Faith Pieper

I think, at least in this case, that the principal is complicit!

Camille Mahdi
Camille Mahdi

I've raised a child as well, and from a young age she took an interest in what was going on in the world. Also children pay attention, especially when adults are saying crazy things in their presence. My niece and nephew, who are both 5, and live in two different households, both came home and told their parents things that students at school were saying the day after the election. They were both concerned and afraid and my siblings and their spouses had to reassure them that everything was going to be okay.

Camille Mahdi
Camille Mahdi

Of course it's a parents job to reassure their children. The point was that kindergarteners are repeating what adults are saying and saying it to other kids. Hence the reason for the principal's letter.

Faith Pieper
Faith Pieper

These are obviously hillary backers that are scaring their children --- not Trumpsters. The principal's actions seem to put the onus on Trump and his voters?

Camille Mahdi
Camille Mahdi

The letter said "regardless of your party affiliations". He didn't specify any party. His only point was watch what you say around your children. No one should have a problem with that.

Starr Helton

Faith Pieper it is not fake. These are not isolated incidents. They are happening all over the nation. No, these babies may or may not understand what is being said at home but they will repeat. I taught twelve year olds for 30 years and the things that children repeated would surprise and appall most parents.

Brandi Jones
Brandi Jones

Faith Pieper you really are out of touch. Children are well aware of what is going on. Beginning in 1st grade student are required to complete 1 current events assignment per week. My children have watched the news since they were 2-3 years old. I am sure most parents had to explain Trumps rhetoric during the campaign process. Especially during the debates. Don't assume that parents and educators are pumping these children with fear. Why would they? Blame Trump for his hate fill statements.
