Trump White House makes final push for Betsy DeVos, warns Democrats one vote short of blocking her

Bet

The Senate starts debate and final vote on Betsy DeVos Monday.

Today starts the final vote process on Betsy DeVos as U.S. secretary of education. (Under Senate debate rules, Democrats could push the vote to Tuesday.)

Despite the assurance of President Trump’s spokesman Sean Spicer the confirmation is a cinch,  the administration is making a last-ditch push today for DeVos in an email solicitation.

The Michigan billionaire and mega Republican donor ran into trouble last week when two Republican senators announced they will not approve her, citing her lack of education experience. The announcement by Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, set off a flurry of politicking on both sides and an unusual 6:30 a.m. Senate vote Friday to advance the DeVos nomination.

While no other Republican senator has indicated a defection, the Trump White House wants to counter the vocal opposition to DeVos. Opponents have at times overwhelmed the voicemail and phone lines of Georgia’s two GOP senators, neither of whom seems inclined to break ranks with their party.

DeVos did not help her cause with a lackluster hearing, in which she garbled special education law, waffled on accountability for charter schools and said rural schools in Wyoming might want guns to protect against grizzlies. (The state bans guns in its schools.)

She has drawn some big-name backers, including former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. “Betsy DeVos will take on the entrenched special interests in American education that have put the interests of adults ahead of school children for too long,” Bush said in a statement.

Trump allies received this email today:

Friend,

We need your help.

Democrats are JUST ONE VOTE AWAY from blocking President Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos.

Betsy has dedicated her life to fighting for greater education opportunities for children in lower-income neighborhoods, and to protecting YOUR fundamental right to send your child to the school that represents your values.

We’re asking you to represent your zip code and stand with Betsy BEFORE the vote is officially cast.

Please sign our official petition to show YOUR support for President Trump’s nominee for secretary of education, Betsy DeVos.

We’re asking you to remind your representatives that education is the bedrock of our nation. The values we instill in our children will have dire consequences for our country’s future.

Democrats want to expand the federal government’s overreach into our local schools, and further corrode your freedom and choices as a parent.

Betsy understands that families should be the chief decision-makers – NOT Washington bureaucrats.

Betsy’s defeat would signal a major loss for the school choice movement that has worked so hard to get where we are today.

We can’t let it happen, Friend.

Please speak up on behalf of your zip code to show your support.

Thank you,

Trump Headquarters

Every Trump voter owns this. Those who voted for Isaakson and Perdue are going to support an individual who has spent MILLIONS and much of her life FIGHTING the very education process she KNOWS NOTHING about. hahahahha I just hope people FIGHT for HOME SCHOOL TAX EXemptions.

Senator Perdue posted on Twitter why he is voting yes (completely ignorant reasons, but his reasoning nonetheless). There were pages of responses from Georgians who disagree with him. Just remember, Georgia voted 60-40 to protect public education from the type of Leadership that DeVos has brought to Michigan (look at the state of Detroit schools if you really think DeVos will be good for public education).

@dg417s Detroit public schools are run by the unions. I agree that they need massive, sweeping changes.

She should just start packing! You aren't ready for this position! We thank you for showing us that you are not qualified. It's better for us to know in advance! Experience is key! Knowledge is power!

This laughable piece of work actually bought advertisements on Television trying to promote herself.  It is clear to all thinking people at this point that Ms. DeVos has no qualifications, education, or experience that would make her a leader of American Education.  Even if confirmed by those lazy Republicans who can not find anyone in their party who actually is qualified, no one will pay any attention to her.  One more joke for Saturday Night Live.  Trump is fueling the comedy industry better than any administration in decades.  George W. is a brilliant Nobel Laureate compared to this group of morons.

The diehards on your side still won't accept November's election results.

And you're down to childish name calling.

@#SoreLosers Because Trump won the EC and he says "the sky is green", the sky must be green, right?  Anything else means you're really a Democrat, amiright?

“Betsy DeVos will take on the entrenched special interests in American education that have put the interests of adults ahead of school children for too long,” Bush said More proof that the GOP is completely out of touch with reality. DeVos IS one of those "entrenched special interests" that have been dedicated to ruining education.

She bought her way to a post that is so important for our children's future, she is clearly unfit for the position. hope the senators have conscience not to confirm her.

Given her gross incompetence and buying her way in - DeVos shows that Republicans are not interested in our kids - period. It's one thing to have different opinions about education, but this woman is so grossly incompetent - that her nomination is an insult to America's parents no matter what your political view. You don't hire your dog walker to do your kid's brain surgery - why would you ever let anyone hire someone like DeVos to help educate them? We will remember this Republicans. You don't mess with our kids.

Our two Georgia senators will vote for Ms. DeVos because she's qualified, she's what's needed to bring public education into the 21st century, and she's the President's pick.

Plus, seating President Trump's entire cabinet might finally bring home to Democrats that they lost the election.

My words are not "partisan hyperbole and nonsense."

That is a naive comment by you. Betsy DeVos IS trying to destroy public education and that leads deliberately into destroying other public institutions and policies being destroyed by ideological Republicans.  Just look at the people nominated for Trump's Cabinet, besides DeVos. Ideological Republican leaders picked education first, 25 years ago to target, I believe, in thinking that educational leaders would be soft targets for their radical agenda to reshape America, by cutting government and America's public institutions and policies to the bone.  And, look at the result.  Donald Trump as President.  Sad for America.

Obviously, you have not been following highly respected commentators, educational and political.

Moreover, in terms of Betsy DeVos' specific actions, detrimental to our republic:

She wants to change public education to private education, funded by public tax dollars by incorporating charter schools run by corporations for profit, and she wants religious doctrine (Christian) to be taught in these "public" schools.  This woman is a billionaire who bought her position through her influence with lawmakers.  She knows next to nothing about how children learn and grow academically.  Look at her lack of educational credentials and experiences in the field, firsthand.

It is not a matter of losing the election. It is a matter of losing our republic. Wake up.

@#Constitutionalist Please tell me exactly what qualifications she has to run the system that educates 90% of American children? Michigan is (to use the President's favorite word) a disaster and it is largely Ms. DeVos's fault.

@#Constitutionalist @MaryElizabethSings So you are saying Trump can't make a mistake with his Cabinet just because he won the election? Sure, he can. Go watch DeVos' hearing. He made a mistake. The for-profit colleges are going to rake in taxpayer money and have no oversight because she doesn't see the need. For-profit schools are pretty slick at marketing and getting kids to take out taxpayer-backed loans, which will not get paid back because the degree is worthless. This is my tax I am trying to protect.

She has no knowledge of her post and should be denied. Enough is enough Trump I hope you didn't threaten the Democrats.Money won't buy you common sense nor will it get you this position. It's time to stop Trump he's bullied his way to the white house it's time to stop him .

The destruction of traditional public education has been the goal of libertarian Republicans for at least a quarter of a century, in order to accomplish their more far-reaching objective of destroying most of our nation's public institutions in favor of private ones.  If we open our eyes to see this truth, we can observe the choices that President Donald Trump has made in the Secretaries which will encompass his cabinet.  Do away with public education; do away with public healthcare; do away with environmental control on corporations as determined, at the present time, by the government; do away with Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid.

The public schools can be improved from within including establishing not for profit charter schools, if needed, that are part of the local Board of Education's plans for its particular area's school system, accountable to the school system for establishing innovative public school practices within the framework of public education as now designed.

We must not be naive to what is really going on here.  What is going on is not only sneaky but dangerous to the common welfare of our nation.  The private market is for profit.  America's public institutions embrace public service, not profit.

Readers, forget Georgia's two senators. I believe they are a lost cause, but please call all other Republican senators in the US Congress and entreaty them not to vote for Betsy DeVos. Vote "No" regarding her possible confirmation. Only one more Republican senator's no vote is needed.

Betsy DeVos is completely unqualified for a position as Secretary of Education. Confirming her just to keep the "party line" make me think less of our two Georgia Senators.

Heath Harvey
Heath Harvey

DeVos is completely unqualified. She is basically a lobbyist for for profit private schools and she opposes accountability. In Michigan the for profit private schools siphoned funds away from public schools. The new schools were inferior to the public schools and public schools deteriorated. The only group that can expect to benefit are the private school companies.

Roger Swaine

An uneducated populace is easier to manipulate and lie to - so it benefits those in power and those that seek it. It's a standard practice on how to destroy a perfectly functional public service - cut funding until it fails and then claim the private sector can do a better job. Invariably it can't for basic services but money isn't squeezed out of the poor with that sort of attitude...

Shira Newman
Shira Newman

Siphoned? Used it for something else perhaps. But public schools are failing everywhere. Why do we need to give them more money?

Sam Wilson

If she gets in then our education system is screwed more than it already is. I'd rather have the average 8th grader running the DoE than this idiot.

Sam Wilson

because she is a complete idiot. The only reason she is there is because she donated a lot to Trumps campaign. She has never been to public school much less had an educational administration role. She firmly believes in stripping our public school system and allocating more funding to charter and private schools. Watch her hearing with the senate and you can see how idiotic she is for yourself. She has no experience nor competence to run a federal agency like the Department of Education.

If they want to "speak on behalf of their zip code" then they would vote NO to Betsy DeVos. I think a voicemail box that is repeatedly full would be proof of that... I think that we need new Senators come Nov 2018!
